3 New York State Cities Named Best for First-Time Home Buyers

Upstate New York has many options for people looking to buy their first home. The cost of living here is quite low compared to other places in the US, and you can usually find a decent home in a decent area that fits your budget.

This isn’t news to those of us who already live here, but word is getting around: Realtor.com recently published its top 10 list of the best real estate markets for first-time home buyers, and THREE cities in upstate New York have it made it to the list :

The Realtor.comĀ® economics team has identified these top real estate markets for first-time home buyers in 2023. More than half are in the Northeast, mostly in smaller towns not far from larger urban areas where jobs are plentiful. Things to do on a Saturday night and lots of outdoor facilities nearby. Some of the top picks are more rural areas that are being built up, while others have struggled in recent years and are bouncing back.

Eggertsville is a suburb outside of Buffalo and ranks 7th on the realtor list. The median house price is $230,800 and you are only about 15 minutes from New York’s second largest city. Buffalo has a great sports and music scene, and you’re not far from Canada either.

Watervliet in the Hudson Valley came in 8th. The median house price was $228,300, and again you are only about 15 minutes from Albany, a town that has a lot to offer. You are not far from the beauty of the Catskills, and you can take a short train ride to the Big Apple for a big city getaway.

Mattydale, a Syracuse suburb near Lake Onondaga, was just in median home prices $128,900. It is also the birthplace of L. Frank Baum, architect of The Wizard of Oz. Proximity to Syracuse Hancock International Airport also draws travel enthusiasts.
