Here are some events to watch in New York City on the Lunar New Year

It’s the year of the rabbit! Celebrate the month-long Lunar New Year celebrations in New York City this weekend, culminating in the big, hilarious 25th Annual Lunar New Year Parade in Manhattan’s Chinatown.

Below are events – listed in chronological order – to get you hopping, hopping, and jumping around New York City.

Manhattan

Olly Olly Food Hall & Market New Year Festival

It’s almost Lunar New Year! Visit the Olly Olly Market for customized Forsyth Fortune Cookies, a live lion dance performance, and a raffle with many prizes, proceeds benefit Send Chinatown Love, a non-profit organization that supports local mom and pop restaurants. They’re also giving away a free Lunar Hard Seltzer with the purchase of their baby burrito.

Very big, very Asian comedy Lunar New Year show

Featuring some of the best Asian and Asian-American comedians in the industry, plus up and coming comics not to be missed. This is one of Broadway Comedy Club’s most popular shows and a must see.

Celebrate the Year of the Rabbit, one of the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac, with performances, interactive activities and artist-led workshops for all ages. All activities are free with museum admission and no registration is required. Entry is free for members and children under 12. For New York State residents and NY, NJ and CT students, the amount to pay is up to you.

Ring in the Year of the Rabbit with a festive afternoon for the whole family – performances, screenings, workshops and meet-the-authors.

Run for the Midnight Run in Chinatown LNY 2023

Just after the celebrations to kick off 2023, Run for Chinatown and Nike NYC come together to welcome the Year of the Water Bunny. To kick off the holiday season, they come together on the eve of the Lunar New Year for a nightly 5K community run.

25th Annual Lunar New Year Fireworks Ceremony and Cultural Festival

Better Chinatown USA will set off hundreds of thousands of firecrackers to ward off evil spirits. Enjoy dances, cultural activities and food vendors at Sara D. Roosevelt Park.

Jump with Think! into the successful year of the rabbit! Chinatown! The first day of the LNY is Sunday this year, and Chinatown will be hot & loud at best. There will be lion dancing, confetti and lots of friends and neighbors. The T!C crew will join the celebrations on Mott St. with a reveal of their annual Lantern Artist-in-Residency project.

Join Yu & Me Books for their first annual Lunar New Year Book Fair for children. There will be activities, read-alongs, stories and treats from Brooklyn Bakesale.

Celebrate the Year of the Rabbit at MAD’s intergenerational workshop led by artist educator Jocelyn Yang. Inspired by the Chinese craft tradition of forming colorful dough figures, participants will form New Year rabbits and other Chinese zodiac animals from rice flour dough. Studio Sunday is an artistic program for visitors aged five and over. Tickets are required and include admission to the museum. Space is limited.

The biggest event of the year at Canal Street Market is upon us! The Market is excited to celebrate the Lunar New Year with its amazing community of restaurants and small businesses!

Celebrate the Lunar New Year with friends and family at Think! Community studio in Chinatown. Folk artists will demonstrate and sell their traditional crafts, with Xun Ye making LNY-themed dough figures and Becky Hsu writing spring couples to bring happiness to your house. Make your rounds at our pop up tea house to wish everyone a happy new year with tea and prosperity tray.

Think! Chinatown’s Lantern Artist-in-Residence will be demonstrating his lantern on Mott Street on Super Saturday. Enjoy lion dance and confetti with family and friends.

25th Annual Lunar New Year Parade in Manhattan Chinatown

Parade route: Mott & Canal to Chatham Square to East Broadway towards the Manhattan Bridge, to Eldridge and Forsyth Street towards Grand Street next to Sara D. Roosevelt Park. See colorful floats, marching bands, lion and dragon dancers, antique cars, beauty queens and performers at the Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade & Festival.

Come and warm up from the parade at Think! Lantern Festival Party in Chinatown. There will be classic Lunar New Year treats, hot tea, New Year’s karaoke and a workshop hosted by T!C’s Lantern Artist-in-Residence.

Brooklyn

Brooklyn Children’s Museum Lunar New Year Celebration

Join the Brooklyn Children’s Museum as we celebrate the Year of the Rabbit! Learn about Lunar New Year traditions through storytelling, live music, calligraphy workshops and a rooftop lion dance parade led by the Chinatown Community Young Lions.

The Moon Market at Land to Sea

A mini-mart at the back of the Land to Sea cafe and creative hub with small Asian-owned shops ranging from clothing, art prints, jewellery, plants, stationery and more. There will be a Chinese candy/snack station where you can fill up your sachet and sample some treats that can either inspire nostalgia or be something you’ve never eaten before.

The 8th Annual Red Envelope Show

Visit My Plastic Heart gallery and retail store to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit with original works on red envelopes from over 100 artists at the 8th Annual Red Envelope Show.
