Justice LaSalle Honored at NYSBA’s 2023 Annual Meeting



Annual Meeting 2023 Review of the third day

Months ago, the Department of Justice of the New York State Bar Association selected Hon. Hector LaSalle as the winner of the most prestigious Distinguished Jurist Award of 2023. Today, Judge LaSalle received the award to thunderous applause and overwhelming support and appreciation from NYSBA members.

Additionally, several programs and events took place on the third day of the annual meeting, which brought thousands of NYSBA members and NYS attorneys to the Big Apple for the first in-person annual meeting since 2020.

Here are some other notable events and programs from day three:

  • The Department of Justice honored Presiding Judge Hector D. LaSalle, Second Department of Justice, with the 2023 Distinguished Jurist Award. In his remarks, the Hon. Hector LaSalle spoke about the hard work that is being done in the legal community, of which the vast majority are unseen and is underestimated. He also congratulated his honored colleagues.   • On the third day of the 2023 Annual Meeting, a packed morning session met at the Labor and Employment Law Department. The first part of the plenary session saw great discussion and interaction with a dynamic panel focused on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The panel was moderated by Sasha Carbone, Esq., Associate General Counsel American Arbitration Association and included: Alan Symonette, Esq., Symonette ADR Services, Lisa Csencsits, Director, DE&I, Leadership and HE Professional Programs, Cornell University, Melissa Biren, Esq. , Arbitrator and Mediator.
  • Mega deals and market trends in recent years have been the hot topic in healthcare law. Jason Madden, Proskauer Rose LLP New York, presented trends in private equity investing in the healthcare sector, sub-sectors of interest to investors and legal challenges. Madden discussed how economic pressures have impacted the healthcare sector, the advent of value-based care and increasing provider risk-taking.
  • The NYSBA House of Delegates meets in accordance with the organization’s charter at the annual convention. Reports from nominated committees, election of delegates, updates from the New York Bar Foundation and multiple reports and recommendations to be discussed, debated and put to a vote.
  • The Elder Law and Special Needs Section hosted a program and reception on the third day of the 2023 Annual Convention. Hundreds of members participated in the educational program on a variety of topics, including cybersecurity and privacy, Medicaid Asset Protection Trusts – Drafting Update, and several ethical considerations. The section also looked at the impact and consequences of Covid on the industry and customers.

This year’s Annual Meeting is a hybrid event. All face-to-face events will take place for the first four days, including three programs and events that take place on Saturday mornings. On Monday, January 23 and Tuesday, January 24, the annual meeting will host more than a dozen virtual programs and events.
