New NYC One opening soon – NBC New York

The second legal dispensary will open Tuesday in New York City, and the governor says it will be the first marijuana store run by someone “previously criminalized by cannabis prohibition.”

Smacked LLC is slated to open at 144 Blecker Street next week, with a nearly month-long “soft opening” for the Greenwich Village location. The doors are expected to open at 10 a.m

The first round of retail marijuana licenses gave the green light to three dozen businesses and made way for the first legal dispensary to open last month on Broadway, also in Manhattan. New York reserved its first round of licenses for applicants with marijuana convictions or their relatives, as well as some nonprofit groups.

Roland Conner opens Smacked LLC with his wife and son and with the support of the New York Social Equity Cannabis Investment Fund and the Bronx Cannabis Hub.

“I am thrilled to be a part of history as the first person to open a legal cannabis dispensary in New York City. Given my experience with cannabis, I never imagined opening a business like this,” Conner said in a statement.

“But this isn’t just about me and my family. It’s about anyone harmed by the draconian drug laws of the past. New York’s commitment to righting these wrongs through the law is inspiring. I’m a testament to that commitment because I’m standing here today,” he added.

Conner’s store opening is part of the state’s “pop-up” program to help stores get an initial boost of capital before later opening permanently.

“As with some other initial dispensaries to be supported by the fund, this will give licensees the opportunity to open in the short term to accelerate sales and begin raising capital for their businesses, after which they can move on to final construction.” be closed and then reopen long-term,” the governor’s office said Thursday.

The first legal recreational cannabis dispensary in New York opened on December 28 at the corner of Broadway and Astor Place. It marked the long-awaited launch of a marijuana industry that could become one of the most lucrative in the country.

And more are on the way. An opening date has been set for another pharmacy called Union Square Travel Agency. It will open in an old Chase Bank near the Union Square subway station.

The soft opening is scheduled for February 13th. 51 percent of proceeds go to the Doe Fund, which provides housing, job training and counseling to marginalized people in New York.

In March 2021, New York legalized recreational marijuana use.

Recreational cannabis sales began this morning at seven dispensaries. Lynda Baquero reports.
