The USA Wrestling Girls High School Development Committee co-chaired by Joan Ful and Andrea Yamamotohas determined that the NYSPHSAA has met the required standard for inclusion on the list of states with official girls high school wrestling programs.

The decision to give New York girls’ wrestling status as an emerging sport, as well as the fact that the NYSPHSAA will host the state-level girls’ wrestling invitational tournament (rather than another organization), were factors in New York’s recognition York along with the other state federations that have performed for girls wrestling. The NYSPHSAA has placed girls’ wrestling on the administrative path to soon become an official state championship.

“The New York State Public High School Athletic Association is excited to provide valuable opportunities for girls to participate in the sport of wrestling. The girls wrestling dynamic is a great example of how we listen to our schools who have expressed a desire to implement a new sport. I can’t wait to host our first national championship in the near future,” he said dr Robert ZayasExecutive Director of NYSPHSAA.

This recognition comes about because of the determined efforts of volunteer wrestling leaders, coaches, umpires and families across the state to develop and expand wrestling opportunities for girls in New York high schools.

“I’m excited that the girls of upstate New York have achieved burgeoning sporting status and are given the opportunity to define wrestling for themselves. So many girls have been playing on the boys’ teams for years. I am confident they will have the numbers to support their own girls teams nationwide and soon their own state championship. Special thanks to the many coaches and allies who support their dreams,” he said Kyra Tirana Barrywho chaired a task force that led this grassroots effort.

On March 5, 2022, New York wrestling leaders hosted a successful USA Wrestling sanctioned event, the New York State Girls Folkstyle Championships at Tamarac High School in Troy, NY. and helped propel the overall effort forward.
