Odessa High School students are invited to a prestigious program in New York

ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) – Three Odessa High School students have been invited to participate in the High School Honors performance series in New York.

With a chance to perform at historic Carnegie Hall.

Brothers Ezaiah and Zavian Cisneros and longtime friend Gabriel Haley are drummers.

They were chosen from thousands of auditions by musicians from across the US to participate in the High School Honors Performance Series program, an opportunity they say could be once in a lifetime.

Two of the musicians from the trio of OHS students are seniors and say they’re not sure they’ll be making music after high school, but the opportunity to perform in New York City was too good to pass up to permit.

Haley, one of the seniors, says they couldn’t have done it without the help of one of their teachers.

“We have great employees here. We have Olague, which is one of the reasons I do percussion today. It’s definitely nice to be able to represent three percussionists from West Texas,” said Haley.

Jimmy Olague is the assistant band director at OHS and says Midland-Odessa isn’t known for percussion music like a band or orchestra, but he’s hoping that will change now that these students make the trip to New York.

“The more students who participate, the more people see what it entails and what it is. It’s becoming more popular and offering more opportunities for these students,” Olague said.

The program runs from February 1st to 5th. In the first three days, the students rehearse and visit the city. On the fourth day, the musicians will perform in historic Carnegie Hall.

Zavian Cisneros is a second year student at OHS and was actually invited to perform on this program when he was in seventh grade, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic he was unable to attend.

He says his parents were thrilled he was invited back, this time with his brother by his side.

“They were really excited. They were really proud of us because I mean what are the chances that you and your brother are going to New York to do music at the same time,” Zavian said.

His brother, Ezaiah Cisneros, says this is particularly important to his family as he comes from a long line of relatives who have attended ohs.

“It’s really a great honor because me and my family are all from Odessa High School. My father, my brother, my grandmother, they all went to OHS. Even my mother and my mother’s family,” said Isaiah.

All three are drummers, but the Cisneros brothers will perform with the band, and Haley will perform in the symphony.

The students will leave for New York at the end of January. If you would like to know how you can help these students, you can send your donation to PO Box 1842, Odessa, Texas, 79760.
